- Everyday 6,000 children die in India. Of these 2,000 to 3,000 succumb to malnutrition. Therefore 30% to 50% children die every day due to severe malnutrition
- Of 1.2 million adolescent girls in India 50% record below normal BMI and ALL are anaemic resulting in complications at childbirth, propagation of malnourishment cycle and even death
- A healthy child consumes 1,500 calories. A slum child consumes only 1,000 calories mainly in the form of carbohydrates and gets negligible nutrients Mid-day meals distributed by the govt. are of poor quality and taste. Hence are ineffective
- Underprivileged kids need 50% more calories and 450% more proteins!
- Malnourishment in children causes stunting, under developed brain & heart and death
We need to focus on NUTRITION SECURITY and stop looking at food security from a hunger lens alone.
Annam provides nutritious food supplies to undernourished children and women. Currently we reach 13,000+ malnourished children between the ages 4 to 18 including paediatric cancer patients, hearing impaired, street children, homeless children, tribal children and inmates of a remand home. We help improve the value of their daily intake by assessing their current state of nutrition first, then plan the best supplemental nutrition plan for them. Adding varying combines of bananas, eggs, milk, lassi, chana, soya, dates and fortified nutrition bar to their diet improves their health. In some cases support is provided with nutraceuticals.
Annam is guided by an advisory board comprising of
-
Dr. Balsekar - noted paediatrician
-
Ms Suman Aggarwal - renowned nutritionist and
-
Ms Pooja Taparia - founder Arpan
In order to provide a highly concentrated nutritional supplement, we introduced the Shakti Bite - a nutritive snack developed especially for Annam by Ms Suman Aggarwal. It contains 126 kcal/bar including, Protein, Fat, Carbs, Calcium, Iron and Fibre in balanced measures. Hence provides a healthy supplement to severely malnourished children and expectant mothers. One Egg, One Banana & One Shakti Bite a day can give a malnourished child a fighting chance to a healthy life.
It is our endeavour to supply nutritious food to undernourished children and women, at the lowest cost and in the shortest possible time, consistently and sustainably. It costs only Rs.50/child/day to provide basic nutrients required to grow normally.
Simple foods can make a difference and simple things can change lives. You can immediately support our various ongoing programmes and help us reach many more malnourished children and women. The method is cheap, fast and effective. These foods directly and instantaneously improve the state of nutrition in the recipient.
